Most Common Causes of Migraines

There are many possible triggers for migraine, and what triggers one person’s migraines may not trigger another person’s. Some triggers include:

  • Stress – Physical, emotional, and environmental factors can cause stress. The most common triggers include changes in routine, sleep disturbances, physical or mental exhaustion, and psychological strain.
  • Changes in Sleep, Diet, and Weather – Changes in sleep, diet, and weather can cause an increase in stress hormones and disruption of the body’s circadian rhythm. This can lead to an increase in migraine episodes.
  • Hormonal Shifts – Hormonal shifts caused by many things, including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and hormone-altering medications such as birth control pills can trigger chemical changes in the brain that can lead to migraines.
  • Alcohol or Caffeine Use – Alcohol, especially red wine, has been linked to triggering migraines in some people. This is due to the sulfites and other chemicals in wine, as well as the dehydration that results from drinking alcohol. Similarly, too much caffeine has adverse effects and can make migraines worse.

Available Treatments for Migraines Include:

  • Pain-relieving medication (Triptans, Anti-CGRP) – Triptans and Anti-CGRP are common medications that can help reduce migraine attacks’ intensity and duration. Triptans narrow the blood vessels and block pathways of pain in the brain, while Anti-CGRP blocks the release of the neurotransmitter CGRP, which is thought to be involved with the pain associated with migraines.
  • Preventative medication (Injections, Infusions, Antidepressants) – Preventative medication can take the form of injections, infusions, or antidepressants. These medications often target certain proteins linked to migraine symptoms and can reduce the number of migraines a person experiences.
  • Exercise and PT – Exercise and physical therapy are additional non-invasive treatments for migraines that can help to prevent future episodes. These routines also help to reduce the intensity and frequency of migraines.

Migraine Pain FAQ

Migraine pain can feel like a throbbing or pulsing sensation in different areas around the head and face. It is often accompanied by lightheadedness, vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

There are a variety of different factors that can affect the severity of migraine pain. These can include things like increased physical activity, exposure to light, sound and even smells, and any other underlying health conditions that may be present.

Some people may only experience a migraine once or twice yearly, while others may have them much more frequently, even daily. And while some migraines may only last a few hours, others can be much more debilitating, lasting for days or weeks.

There are several different types of migraines, including migraine with aura, where you will experience an “aura” or warning sign that the migraine is imminent. Migraine without aura, the most common type of migraine, occurs without any warning signs. Finally, some may experience chronic migraines, a rare yet disabling type of migraine that only affects roughly 2 in 100 people.
